Where they started

The challenge

Exquisite Introductions is a luxury matchmaking agency. The site is the first impression for people who are about to hand over a great deal of personal information, so it has to feel considered, and it does. It is a custom WordPress theme with Elementor and a photography-led homepage.

It was not a slow site in the way people usually mean. It scored 86 on mobile, which most owners would be happy with and most agencies would leave alone. The problem was underneath that number. First paint was taking 2.9 seconds and the largest element on the page was not finishing until 3.3 seconds, which on a phone on mobile data is long enough to lose someone who is only mildly curious.

Nothing about the design needed to change. The brief was to leave the site looking exactly as it does and make it arrive faster.

Our approach

What we did

We measured first, on the homepage, logged out, on mobile and desktop, so there was a baseline that could be compared honestly afterwards rather than a vague sense that things felt quicker.

The work was in four places. WP Rocket was already installed but not configured for this site in particular, so caching and delivery were tuned properly rather than left on defaults. Images were compressed and served as WebP, which is where most of the first-paint time was going on a photography-led page. Render-blocking CSS and JavaScript were deferred so the browser could paint something before it had finished fetching everything. The database was cleaned up and indexed.

No plugin was installed to make a score go up, and no part of the design was simplified to buy a number.

What changed

The results

Re-tested on 17 October, logged out, on the same homepage: 97 on mobile and 99 on desktop, with every Core Web Vital in the green.

First Contentful Paint came down from 2.9 seconds to 1.0. Largest Contentful Paint came down from 3.3 seconds to 2.3. Total Blocking Time sits at 30ms on mobile and zero on desktop, and Cumulative Layout Shift at 0.04, so nothing jumps around while the page is loading.

On desktop the numbers are better again, with the largest element painting in 0.6 seconds and layout shift at 0.001. The site is at exquisiteintroductions.com and can be tested by anyone.

Worth saying plainly: PageSpeed gives a slightly different score on every run. The figures above are a single dated test rather than a permanent property of the site.

PageSpeed Insights, homepage, logged out. Mobile 86 to 97, desktop 99, all Core Web Vitals green.
