About the role

Web & Rank builds websites and the automation behind them for service businesses in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Most clients arrive with the same complaint: the site is fine, and nobody finds it.

Increasingly that is two problems rather than one. A growing share of the people who would have typed a query into Google now ask an assistant instead, read the answer, and never see a blue link. Ranking third for a term nobody clicks is not a win, and neither is being quoted by a chatbot that sends no traffic. Somebody has to work out which of those actually produces enquiries for a given client, and that is this role.

You would own search for a handful of accounts end to end: the research, the briefs, the technical fixes, and the honest answer about whether any of it moved a number. You would also own the newer half of the problem, which is genuinely unsettled ground. We are not going to pretend there is a playbook for getting cited by an assistant. There are patterns, there is measurement, and there is a lot of confident nonsense being sold. Part of the job is telling the difference and being willing to say when something did not work.

This is not a link building role, it is not a content mill, and it is not a job where you hand a client a dashboard and hope they do not read it closely. We would rather lose a retainer than report a number we cannot defend.

What you would do

Own organic search for a small number of client accounts, from first audit through to the monthly conversation about what changed and why.
Do keyword and topic research that survives a SERP check. Volume and difficulty scores are a starting point; what is actually ranking decides whether a page is worth building.
Write briefs that a writer can work from, and write the page yourself when the subject needs somebody who understands it.
Find and specify the technical work: crawlability, internal linking, page structure, schema, Core Web Vitals. You do not need to ship the code, you do need to be specific enough that a developer can.
Track how client brands appear in AI assistants and AI Overviews, not just in the ten blue links, and build a view of what moves that.
Report honestly every month, including the months where the answer is that nothing moved yet.
Work alongside the build and automation side of the team, because ranking a page that then loses the enquiry is not a result.
Tell us when a client is asking for the wrong thing, and what they should buy instead.

What we need from you

Three or more years doing SEO where you owned the outcome rather than a ticket queue. Agency, in-house or freelance are all fine.
You can read a SERP and explain why a page is there. This matters more to us than any certification.
Fluent in Google Search Console plus Ahrefs or Semrush, and comfortable checking a claim in the data before repeating it.
You write clear English that a client’s customer would actually read. We publish our own writing; you will see the standard on this site.
Enough technical literacy to work with a developer: you understand redirects, canonicals, rendering and structured data even if you do not write the code.
Genuine curiosity about how AI search picks its sources, and enough scepticism to test rather than repeat what LinkedIn says.
Willing to say “this will not work” to a client, with the reasoning, before taking their money.
At least four hours a day overlapping UK afternoons, so the whole team can talk in real time.

Nice to have

Agency experience juggling several accounts with different levels of maturity.
Hands-on WordPress and Shopify familiarity, since that is most of what we build.
Local SEO and map pack work for multi-location service businesses.
You have run an actual experiment on AI citations and have the data, however inconclusive.
Some automation literacy: GoHighLevel, Zapier, Make or n8n.
Experience in one of the sectors we work in most: home services, legal, healthcare, ecommerce or B2B SaaS.

How we hire

Four steps, and you hear back at each one

The whole process takes about two weeks. If it is going to take longer than that we will tell you why.

You email us

A short note about why this role, and a link to something you have actually done. No cover letter theatre, no form with nineteen fields.

A thirty minute call

Mostly us asking how you think about the work, and you asking whatever you want about us. Camera optional.

A paid test task

A small, real piece of work scoped to a few hours, and we pay your rate for it. You learn as much about us from it as we do about you.

An offer, or a straight no

Either way you hear back with a reason. If it is a no, we tell you what tipped it.

Next step

Think this is you?

Send a short note and a link to something you have done. We read every application and we reply to every one, including the no.
